Bringing Art to Life at VIDA San Antonio: Unveiling the First Public Installation

Art is a powerful connector, uniting people to share stories, celebrate cultures, and express emotions. Southstar views art as an essential element in creating vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods—a belief that has shaped the approach at VIDA San Antonio. This summer, the first public art installation was unveiled: a dynamic sculpture by local artists Wanderlust Ironwork. This marks the beginning of Southstar’s commitment to enriching community life through art.

A Vision for Art at VIDA

To bring this vision to life, Southstar and the VIDA team collaborated with local leaders and creatives to establish an arts council. This council was tasked with integrating art into the very fabric of VIDA. Its mission was clear: to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) inviting local artists to create artworks that reflect the unique vibrancy of the community.

The council carefully reviewed submissions, seeking pieces that would resonate with VIDA’s spirit—works that reflect the community’s diversity, energy, and cultural richness. The council selected Wanderlust Ironwork, a talented artist duo renowned for their innovative metalwork and deep community ties. Their proposed piece, titled It Takes All Kinds, perfectly captures the spirit of VIDA San Antonio.

Situated in one of VIDA’s parks, It Takes All Kinds celebrates the diversity and unity of the San Antonio community. The sculpture’s flowing metal forms and interconnected designs symbolize the many people, backgrounds, and stories that make up the city. It serves as a reminder that the community thrives when everyone comes together, embracing the unique qualities each person brings.

The installation has quickly become a beloved piece, drawing the attention of residents and visitors alike. It invites interaction, reflection, and conversation, offering a space for people to gather, connect, and enjoy the beauty of public art.

A Commitment to Art in All Communities

By introducing art into public spaces, Southstar is helping create a more welcoming and inclusive environment where all community members can feel a sense of pride and belonging. It Takes All Kinds is the first step in a larger initiative to make art accessible and visible throughout the Southside of San Antonio.

Everyone is invited to visit VIDA San Antonio and experience It Takes All Kinds firsthand. Take a stroll through the parks, immerse yourself in the beauty of this sculpture, and become part of a community that values art in all its forms. This milestone is just the beginning, with many more artful additions planned to shape the heart and soul of VIDA and future communities.

Looking ahead to future communities, including the Mayfair project in New Braunfels, Southstar plans to engage local artists and ensure art remains a vital part of every community.
